Ruth Harbor is a 6-8 resident home, the key word being HOME, located in Des Moines. It provides young women who are alone and facing unplanned pregnancies a truly viable option -- a safe harbor -- by providing housing, education, counseling, health care, parenting training or adoption assistance, spiritual support and more for the duration of their pregnancies.

More Than Just Another Social Program. The key difference between Ruth Harbor and other programs helping pregnant women is that the goal is to bring about a life change which ends the cycle of self-defeating behavior. This interdenominational ministry was founded on the belief that a personal relationship with Christ is at the center of life change. The circumstances which bring women to Ruth Harbor are of little consequence, who they are and how they feel about themselves when they leave is the focus. Grace is the key philosophy of this program.

Adoption Counseling And Parenting Classes. All women will receive counseling to help them decide what to do once their children are born. Women who decide to parent their baby will be required to attend parenting classes. Those who choose adoption will be well-informed about their options and assisted through the process.

Ruth Harbor Volunteer Receives Community Honor

Long before Ruth Harbor opened its doors to serve pregnant young women in our community 10 years ago, Joyce Fedderson was already hard at work pouring her time and talents into the ministry's success.

Joyce played an instrumental role in helping Ruth Harbor get off to a good start by helping establish the organization's policies and procedures manual and serving as Ruth Harbor's first counselor, a position she held in addition to her other counseling work at the time.

Over the years, Joyce has faithfully served Ruth Harbor by volunteering in a variety ways, including her current role providing “counseling oversight,” a case management support process that increases professionalism and enables Ruth Harbor’s ongoing license by the state of Iowa as a residential care facility. According to Ruth Harbor Director Mark McDougal, this service that Joyce provides free of charge is a significant blessing, as the service requires trained expertise and would otherwise cost Ruth Harbor a large per-hour rate.

Joyce's passion for serving Ruth Harbor runs deep, but this energetic woman has also made other incredible contributions to the community and the state. This month, we congratulate Joyce in being selected as one of 10 community leaders to receive the honor of Women of Influence for Greater Des Moines.

New Baby Arrives

As last month’s eNews was being drafted for your computer, news of another newborn at Ruth Harbor arrived from Mercy Hospital here in Des Moines! Praise God with birthmother Erin upon the safe arrival of Comet Dakota. He was a very healthy 9 lbs. 4 oz. and arrived at 1:43 a.m. on June 19.

Erin says that Comet is a strong baby and continues to be very high on the growth percentage charts.

Erin’s journey has not always been easy. Today, she is grateful to live in a host home set up by Ruth Harbor. It was just a few months ago that Erin’s creativity and resourcefulness were important while she lived on the street and in the homeless camps of Des Moines.

Meet the New House Parents

Please join us in welcoming Tim & Vickie Holley to the Ruth Harbor team! The Holleys recently began their new role as House Parents.

For Tim & Vickie, the path that led them to Ruth Harbor was both a surprise and a blessing.

“From early on in our marriage, we felt the calling to work with young people in need,” Vickie said. After years of working in church ministry and then as church planters, they found God leading them in a new direction to serve as house parents. However, they never imagined what God had in store, moving them halfway across the country from their home in South Carolina to Iowa – not once, but twice!
From 2008 to 2010, Tim & Vickie served as house parents at Cherish House, a Christ-centered maternity home in Spirit Lake, IA. While there, the Holleys helped to establish Cherish House Creations, a “cottage industry” designed to teach business skills to house residents, giving them the opportunity to learn how to make soy candles and wax bears to sell to the public.
After returning to South Carolina, the Holleys had no idea they'd be back in Iowa again so soon! “That was a God thing,” Tim said, “because we weren't looking for it.” When Executive Director Mark McDougal contacted them this spring about the open position for house parents at Ruth Harbor, they weren't sure what God had in mind but watched in amazement as one obstacle after another was removed from their path. “God's timing was clear,” Tim said. “There are some confirmations that you just can't ignore, and we knew that Ruth Harbor is where God wanted us to be.”

As the new house parents, Tim & Vickie are working prayerfully through this period of adjustment, as they establish relationships with the current Ruth Harbor residents. “We are excited to be serving them,” Vickie said, “and hoping to model a healthy Christian home.”

The Holleys are excited for what lies ahead at Ruth Harbor and feel blessed to have seen God's hand so clearly throughout the journey that brought them here. “When God puts it on your heart, it's hard to deny,” Tim said. “Every day is a faith walk. We love what we do. It takes a lot of grace and a lot of patience, but where God calls us, He equips us.”

Two Births in Two Days!

June was an exciting month as three Ruth Harbor residents gave birth - two of them just a few hours apart! On June 2, Emily Rose arrived at 5:20 a.m., weighing 6 lbs, 7 oz and measuring 19 inches long. She has light hair and reminds us all of her mother, Ashley. Both are doing well. Ashley is parenting and planning to attend college classes this fall.

Less than 15 hours later, Jordan Abram arrived on June 3 at 8:08 a.m. He was 7 lbs, 9 oz and 19-3/4 inches long. Birth mother Jessica is well on her way to recovery. Several weeks before his birth, Jessica made the courageous decision to place Jordan in the loving care of an adoptive family. Watch for more about Jessica's story in a future Ruth Harbor eNews.

Walk for Life 2011

This year's Walk for Life was unlike any of the past and a perfect way to kick off the 10th Anniversary celebration of serving young women in our community!

Amazing weather, a good turnout, and the opportunity to tour the Ruth Harbor home and neighborhood were among the many highlights. Around 200 participants took to the streets around the Ruth Harbor home for this year's Walk for Life and helped raise nearly $29,000. Sponsored walkers are the key to the event's success. Thank you to everyone who walked or volunteered during this special day! Click here to see photos.

This was the first time in the walk's six-year history that it was held at Ruth Harbor, giving the staff, volunteers, and residents a unique opportunity to show firsthand what the Christ-centered home for pregnant young women is all about and to point people toward the many ways they can get connected. Executive Director Mark McDougal was encouraged to see the many people that day taking tours of the home, interacting with residents at the children's activities, and visiting the informational booth to write notes of encouragement to residents or sign up to volunteer in various ways.

"With our first time having the walk at Ruth Harbor, everything came together better than we had dreamed," McDougal said. He thanked the many volunteers, Des Moines Police Department, and City of Des Moines for supporting a walk route on local streets.

Meet Joyce Fedderson

Tell us about your family.
My husband John and I have four daughters and 14 grandchildren. Three of our daughters live in the Des Moines area, and we have fun and keep busy going to our grandkids' events.

How did you hear about Ruth Harbor?
I came to learn about Ruth Harbor through a relationship I had with one of the organization's founders, Carrie Leiran. I'd worked closely with Carrie over the years because she was a dietician and I treated people with eating disorders through counseling.
Carrie and I attended the same church, Lutheran Church of Hope, and I learned that she and two other women from Hope – Becky Zemlicka and Jessica Dunker – were joining together to get Ruth Harbor started.
What made you want to get involved?
I remember the time that these three women came together with this revelation that this was something that they were supposed to do, and I was so impressed with how they were following God's direction on this.

Also, in my profession I was aware of young women in need of this kind of service. I was excited to see a plan take shape for this kind of service to be provided on a Christian basis.
What do you remember about that time of getting ready to open Ruth Harbor?
It wasn't without its struggles getting it started, but everybody hung in there. It was amazing to me how people came forward to help with everything from remodeling to lawn work. I just have such wonderful memories of how volunteers transformed that house. It was wonderful to see how God moved through everyone who came forward to help. It was just so much fun to be part of that – to be used by God to carry out his plan for that house.

How have you served at Ruth Harbor?
I worked part time as the first counselor and then helped write all the policies and procedures before it opened over the period of a couple of years. Over the years, my husband and I have filled in as house parents a time or two, and I've been on call as an adviser. I still supervise the counselor because that oversight is required by the state. The counselor is so capable that it's not a big task!
What kind of memories do you carry with you from your days as a Ruth Harbor counselor?
There was a time at Ruth Harbor that is burned in my memory. There was a young woman in the first group of women at Ruth Harbor who placed her little boy for adoption. When the couple came on the day that the young women was leaving the hospital, we all gathered together in the living room at Ruth Harbor with the woman from the adoption agency. We all prayed together and had a little service right in the living room. It was a mountain-top experience where God's presence was so evident. It was like all of the work and all of the prayers leading up to that point was being blessed by God. It was a beautiful experience that I'll never forget.
Does your passion for serving Ruth Harbor stem from the positive results you've seen?
Yes, when you see things like that happen, you just know that you are in God's will, and you want to do more to help. I have kept in contact with the young woman I mentioned above, and I see other people in the community too who are also leading normal, happy lives after their time at Ruth Harbor. I have seen amazing things happen in these young womens' lives where they have a totally different future than they would have had without Ruth Harbor. I love hearing the stories of the changes that take place.

Tim & Vickie have been married for thirty years.

They have two children: daughter Jessica, 26, and son Timmy, Jr., 24. Both were recently married and live in South Carolina.

Favorite hobbies or ways you relax?Tim – Cooking, computers, buying and selling things on Amazon and eBay, woodworking.
Vickie – Bargain hunting at thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, clearance racks and The Dollar Tree.
Both – Traveling and visiting new places or camping in the Smoky Mountains is our favorite way to relax.

Is it true that both of you like to cook?
Yes. Vickie does more of the home-style cooking, baking and decorating cakes. Tim does the grilling and gourmet-style cooking. Our favorite food is authentic Greek food. We also enjoy authentic Mexican foods.

Other serving experiences before Ruth Harbor?
Vickie has served churches in various food ministries and organized for large and small group events. She is a very proficient organizer and enjoys serving behind the scenes.

Tim has served in pastoral roles such as Minister of Education, Discipleship Director, Church Administrator, Associate Pastor, Church Planter, and Pastor.

Businesses or job experiences?
We have both worked side by side in various ministries and business ventures for most of our 30 years of marriage. Vickie has worked as a secretary, administrative assistant, office administrator and as a Domestic Engineer (mom and wife!) Tim has owned several businesses from home repair and financial counseling to leadership training and various sales positions.

What’s are your thoughts about moving to Iowa from the coast of South Carolina?
We are excited to serve the Lord here where he has called us to be, and we are trusting God to enable us to adjust quickly. The weather will probably be our biggest adjustment, since we don't get snow in Charleston, SC. We lived only 10 minutes from the beaches there. Our coldest winter weather would typically be in the 20's or 30's for just a few days before returning to the 50's and 60's during the winter months. (We have even had some 80 degree Christmases!) Less humidity here than in SC during the summer months is a welcome change.

Greatest Accomplishment?
Staying married for over 30 years.

Something people may not know about you?
We were high school sweethearts and got married at 17 and 18 years of age.

Never a Dull Moment at the Ruth at the Ruth Harbor House!

For some, the winter months mean that things slow down as if awaiting spring. Not the case at Ruth Harbor!
A bustling house of young residents and an active, serving staff have caused even greater activity at the Ruth Harbor home than normal!

Residents are attending school, signing up for birthing classes, taking their turn with doing dishes, volunteering at a childcare facility, and working (or seeking employment) to name a few things. All are reviewing materials and learning more about their future, whether planning to parent or place for adoption. One resident recently received her driving permit and hopes to get her license.

When the residents are active, so is the staff that supports them! Scheduling starts with work and school, but extends to volunteering, doctor appointments, library visits, and grocery shopping. Transportation support for all of these activities keeps both of our minivans rolling much of the day.

Volunteers have assisted our residents, organized our food pantry, sorted clothing donations, cooked, cleaned, updated computers, and painted... to name a few!

God's kingdom work is evident at Ruth Harbor... not just because of activity, but also because of the life changes observed in our residents. When the buzz of a typical day culminates in reflective discussion after our family-style dinner, it quickly becomes evident that the purposeful activity of the day has helped our residents move yet closer toward their goals.

Ruth Harbor in Need of Host Homes

Ruth Harbor alumni are headed various directions once they have given birth - college, their own apartment, returning to their parent's home, other social service programs, etc. Some alumni are in need of additional support for a few weeks or months that is being provided by "Host Homes."

With an introduction and input from Ruth Harbor, local families are extending true hospitality as a Host Home for some Ruth Harbor alumni who are not yet able to be 'out there' on their own yet.

Host Homes provide a stable Christian household to nurture the young woman as she begins a new chapter in her life - whether she has chosen to parent or place for adoption.

As a guest in a Host Home, young women have the opportunity to see examples of healthy relationships and observe the practical results and daily impact of faith in Christ. The experience a young woman has in a Host Home is often a critical piece in her success as she matures, learns and continues to prepare for her future.

Do you have an extra bedroom or area to share with one of our alumni? Ruth Harbor is currently seeking new families with interest in being a Host Home, as well as being on a contact list for future possibilities.

Please join us in welcoming Kristin to the Ruth Harbor team! Kristin began her new role as House Parent Assistant on Sept. 20, 2010. For Kristin, serving as house parent assistant is exactly the type of work she feels God has been preparing her for over these past several years.

"The Lord has blessed me by leading me into a lot of unique situations where I've encountered people going through tough times," Kristin said. "Through experiences I've had doing missions work and traveling, God has really softened my heart toward women in tough situations."

As the new house parent assistant, Kristin is already building relationships with the Ruth Harbor residents and beginning to share with them her story of how God has guided her and provided her with strength to get through challenging times.

"I can see that God has been so faithful in my life to help me with everything I've gone through," Kristin said. "I'm excited to be able to pour into our residents' lives and be able to offer encouragement to them. Hopefully as a result they can have a better understanding of who God is and how he loves

them."
Outside of her passion for serving God, Kristin enjoys photography, writing, reading, coffee/hanging out at coffee shops and spending time with others.

Education: B.S. from Temple University. Major in Christian Ministries and minor in Music (voice proficiency).
Work Experience: Served in three different churches over the past 15 years in youth ministry, most recently with First Family Church in Ankeny.

How did serving in youth ministry prepare you for this new role? We (Mary and I) have enjoyed having the opportunity to build relationships with many different teens and young adults over the years, from many different walks of life. Also, having experienced several different kinds of small group environments seems to have in some ways prepared us for the situation we are in – with a small group of young ladies that we minister to now.
Hobbies/Interests: Being with family, watching movies or going out to eat. Also golf, basketball, other sports and watching the NFL.
Favorite Scripture passage: Psalm 23…” The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want…”

Mary Hain

Hometown: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Education: B.S. from Temple University. Major in Elementary Education.
Prior Work Experience: Taught preschool, kindergarten and first grade for several years before having children of her own. In recent years, she operated a home-based residential cleaning business on a part-time basis.

What Are You Passionate About? Meeting the needs of others…this means everything from giving a listening ear, to preparing a meal, to running an errand, to sending a card, text or e-mail, to just being with someone.
Hobbies/Interests: Activities with the family like picnics, swimming, movies and going out to eat:) Bargain shopping and thrift shopping. Anything crafty or things that involve creativity. COFFEE!

Julie is 16 and Joyous is 10. They enjoy swimming, movies, going out to eat, picnics, hiking, and going to parks like Ledges State Park. They also enjoy celebrating holidays and taking trips to carnivals, amusement parks and the zoo.

Abby is the Hains’ Black Labrador who also lives at Ruth Harbor. She enjoys playing outside with the family.

Good Counsel for Clients

Ruth Harbor provides comprehensive support and care for young women. A very important part of this care includes counseling that is Christ-centered, professional, practical and grace-based.

With both skill and a heart to help young women, Elaine Stubbs serves as Ruth Harbor's counselor. Elaine's background includes several years of clinical therapy work, crisis intervention and more. Her counseling approach uses a combination of professional, practical and spiritual support to guide birthmothers through timely and important conversations such as setting up a care plan, career planning and dealing with hurts.

Through counseling, Elaine develops an individual, "tailor-made," care plan for each client to help with decision-making, planning for the future and overall well-being. Elaine then works closely with the Ruth Harbor staff to help the care plan "come alive" with educational experiences, projects or real-life tasks. God often uses this "team support" approach as a catalyst for life-change in Ruth Harbor residents and clients.

In addition to providing weekly counseling to the young women Ruth Harbor serves, counseling services are usually offered to the birthmother's family, the birthfather and his family, or others in close relationship with the birthmother.

Ruth Harbor is blessed by a counselor and staff team commitment to its clients. Because of them, we are "making a difference... two lives at a time!"

Baby Breelyn Arrives!

It's with great joy that we announce the birth of Breelyn Kay. Born May 5, to Ruth Harbor mom Tiffany, Breelyn weighed in at a healthy 6 lbs. 14 oz. and measured 20 ½ inches.

Tiffany recently spoke about what Ruth Harbor meant to her during her pregnancy.

She enjoyed the support network she found at Ruth Harbor and described her experience as a great benefit to her as she prepared for motherhood and the future of her family.

"I always looked forward to 'family night' when we all went out to eat or do a special activity together," Tiffany said. "Now that I look back, I had no idea that Ruth Harbor would actually be a 'fun' experience at the same time they were helping me during my pregnancy."

Tiffany said she learned a lot about the birthing and parenting process from Ruth Harbor staff and other educators. She also gained a new handle on how to save money and make specific housing plans for the time after Breelyn arrived.

Another amazing outcome of Tiffany's stay at Ruth Harbor was that she experienced God's love in a whole new light.

"I made some important decisions in my spiritual life while at Ruth Harbor," Tiffany said. "I appreciated that faith was not pushed at me; it was just part of a normal conversation and I had the chance to ask questions when I wanted."

More Walkers and Funds at Ruth Harbor

May 14, 2010, Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home and program for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, recently held its fifth annual “Walk for Life” to raise awareness and raise funds for its mission of caring for young women and their babies.

Even with the unseasonable temperature of 43 degrees, 235 committed community members arrived for the 2-mile, family-friendly walk. It was the fifth time to set a record for number of walkers (20% more than 2009).
Initial gifts and pledges are over $27,000 at this time, an increase over 2009, and contributions are expected to continue as others decide to help. The fundraising goal for the event is $35,000.

The “Walk for Life” was held on the Meredith Trail near downtown Des Moines and coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, as well as the ninth anniversary of operation for Ruth Harbor.

Continued Growth

“We couldn’t be happier with 20% growth in participation, particularly in the cool temperatures,” said Mark McDougal, Executive Director at Ruth Harbor. “Coupled with increased funds over last year, we are encouraged by the number of people who believe in the Ruth Harbor mission!”

McDougal continued, “Most of the expenses for the Walk were cared for by key constituents so individuals are giving with confidence knowing they are actually funding the support that young women need to make positive life-change, give birth to a healthy baby, and become a contributing member of our community. Ruth Harbor constituents are generally committed and loyal because they truly believe in Ruth Harbor’s mission.”
While sponsored walkers are encouraged to come to the walk on Meredith Trail, the unique program is designed so that walkers can raise funds on their own, wherever and whenever they choose.

“We are communicating that individuals who did not come to the event can still walk on their own or simply contribute and help us toward our goal of $35,000,” McDougal explained.

Raising Awareness Is Also Key

When walkers find sponsors, they naturally talk to them about Ruth Harbor and how it helps young women facing unplanned pregnancies. McDougal and others believe it is important for a broad section of the community to know about Ruth Harbor’s services and support for clients. Therefore, the Walk helps raise awareness as well as funds.

New Technology

A big asset for walkers this year was the addition of an “on line” presence that included a personalized web site, tracking, and communication capability complete with graphics and personal email integration. Several walkers reported how much easier is was to raise funds this year or the increased effectiveness they had with their personal web site, which often included their own picture and text of why they became involved.
Sponsors were also able to contribute, communicate, and support walkers on line.

JT weighed in at a healthy 7 lbs 3 ounces and measured 19¼ inches on his birth day, March 23rd. The Ruth Harbor staff had the privilege to walk alongside JT's mother during her final 3½ months of pregnancy.
Our resident recently expressed her gratitude for the life-changing experiences she had at Ruth Harbor.

God's Miracle Baby

It's our joy to share with you one recent example of how God allows the Ruth Harbor community to bear witness to his ability to replace darkness with new life and hope.

Baby Tyler was given no statistical chance of surviving. Ultrasounds leading up to his premature birth revealed poor lung development and no curvature to the ribcage to support breathing. Weighing in at only 4 lb., 5 oz. at birth, Tyler also battled a hole in one of his lungs.

Fueled by the prayers of many, God enabled baby Tyler to overcome the odds by bringing him safely into the world and healing his body. He is now eating and breathing on his own and was recently released from the hospital, one day before his original due date.

Not only did God cover baby Tyler's needs, but he also did a mighty work in his mother during her stay at Ruth Harbor. She received love and support with good nutrition, bed rest, access to top-rate medical care and plenty of prayer. In the process, God used this young woman's circumstances to draw her closer to him.

House Parent Ministry Position

House parents have the opportunity to walk alongside the young women who turn to Ruth Harbor as a safe refuge during their time of unplanned pregnancy. They play a key role in showing grace, love and leadership to residents.

After blessing Ruth Harbor and its residents with their faithful service as house parents for more than three years, Russ and JoDee Cross will complete their house parenting commitment on March 31.

Ruth Harbor is currently seeking the right set of individuals to fill this vital role. Candidates for this position will be a couple with compassion and a heart to care for young women and who also are willing to lovingly speak truth into their lives. This full-time position is for a couple not currently parenting, but parenting experience is certainly a plus.

Funds for Ruth Harbor Despite Economy

Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, held its annual fundraising banquet to support its mission of caring for young women and their babies. More than 350 community members displayed their support for the work of Ruth Harbor by attending. Gifts and pledges from the event are totaling nearly $68,000 as contributions continue to arrive from many who were unable to attend. Ruth Harbor’s goal for the event is $70,000 and Mark McDougal, Executive Director believes they will reach that goal. Last year’s fundraiser provided $68,500 in pledges and contributions.

The banquet was held at the Downtown Marriott on Thursday, November 12 and featured Kirk Walden of Nashville, TN as the keynote speaker. KCCI TV’s Eric Hanson served as the event’s emcee and Executive Director Mark McDougal provided an update on the activities and accomplishments of the organization.

Commitment to Ruth Harbor’s Mission Continues
Ruth Harbor constituents and friends again demonstrated that a strong commitment to a cause will overcome economic fear and concern. McDougal, executive director at Ruth Harbor since 2002, said, “Because Ruth Harbor constituents believe in the mission, they continue to give, sometimes sacrificially, in order to see the mission move forward.”

“The timing of this event is important in the life of our organization.” McDougal continued, “Contributions for Ruth Harbor, like many other non-profits, have been lower so far this year, but we are now hopeful to finish the year in the black.”

RAISING AWARENESS IS ALSO KEY
McDougal also stressed that connecting with other community members was also an important element of the banquet. “After more than 8 years of operation, there are still many who are not aware of our services. There were many who were attending their very first Ruth Harbor event last Thursday.”

Client success and results were highlighted at the banquet when a “Ruth Harbor alumnus” shared her story with attendees.

22% More “Walk” with Ruth Harbor
May 19, 2009, Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, recently held its fourth annual “Walk for Life” to raise awareness and raise funds for its mission of caring for young women and their babies. 195 community members, 22% more than in recent years, displayed their solid support for the work of Ruth Harbor by walking in this growing annual event.

Initial gifts and pledges are over $25,000 at this time, and contributions continue to arrive. Last year’s initial walk total was $29,000 and rose to over $31,000 in the days following the walk.

The “Walk for Life” was held on the Meredith Trail near downtown Des Moines and coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, as well as the eighth anniversary of operation for Ruth Harbor.

Great Potential for Growth“Seeing a significant growth in participants is really encouraging,” said Mark McDougal, Executive Director at Ruth Harbor. “It says that as people find out about our mission to care for and support young women facing an unplanned pregnancy, they respond by getting involved!”

When asked about contributions not growing as greatly as the number of participants, McDougal continued, “We and other nonprofits in the community will be asked to accomplish more on a smaller budget, just like the average American household or business this year. However, people are still giving to Ruth Harbor and our mission, even though it requires a greater sacrifice. We still see commitment and loyalty among constituents because they believe in Ruth Harbor’s mission.”

McDougal’s words are backed up by last year’s Walk donations that were over 95% of the pledges made.

When hard lessons and difficulty come into one’s life (like an unplanned pregnancy), the opportunity for ministry and an open heart for the things of God are often present, too! Through the support and partnerships of area churches, Ruth Harbor is reaching out to meet the needs, of young women. Your investment of prayer, finances, referrals, and volunteers continue to make this ministry possible!

Once each year, Ruth Harbor seeks to connect with churches and church leaders who can assist us in raising awareness of our mission and the funds to support it! We do this through our annual Walk for Life on May 9, 2009. During this time of year, I also seek to connect with each pastor or church liaison in order to provide a ministry update and to be accountable with our ministry, answering any questions you have.

Would you consider partnering with us by:

Volunteers and church liaisons are an important communication link to efficiently spread the word about the important event that raises awareness and funds.

We have wonderful brochures, posters, and t-shirts that will make communicating about the event very easy. Again this year, there is also a 2-minute DVD that provides a visual summary of the walk for churches or groups.

You are invited to a kick-off meeting Thursday, April 2, from 7:00 to 7:45 p.m. here at Ruth Harbor (534 42nd Street, Des Moines). The purpose of the meeting is to:

Rain Grows Ruth Harbor’s “Walk for Life”

May 13, 2008, Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, held its third annual “Walk for Life” this past weekend to raise awareness and raise funds for its mission of caring for young women and their babies. Despite a gentle rain, more than 160 community members (the same attendance as last year in the sunshine) displayed their solid support for the work of Ruth Harbor by attending the walk packing umbrellas and jackets.

Initial gifts and pledges are over $29,000 as contributions continue to arrive. Last year’s initial walk total was $26,000, but rose to over $30,000 in the days following the walk.

The “Walk for Life” was held on the Meredith Trail near downtown Des Moines and coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, as well as the seventh anniversary of operation for Ruth Harbor.

“The rain that began at 7:30 a.m. just south of Downtown Des Moines did not dampen our spirits,” said Mark McDougal, Executive Director at Ruth Harbor. “Especially as supporters and sponsored walkers began pulling into the parking lot. We were encouraged with the same number of walkers as came on a perfect spring morning last year – over 160!” Those who came would have assumed some rain, but the rain stopped just as the 2-mile walk actually got underway.

“We believe this indicates continued growth,” continued McDougal. “We had the same number of walkers this year in spite of the rain and funds raised are ahead of last year’s pace.”

While sponsored walkers are encouraged to come to the walk on Meredith Trail, the unique program is designed so that walkers can raise funds on their own, wherever and whenever they choose.

“So we are trusting that many people who did not come out in the rain will walk on their own and that contributions after the event will actually be greater than last year. If so, we’ll hit our goal of $35,000,” McDougal explained.

Ruth Harbor’s “Walk” is a Success

Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, recently held its second annual “Walk for Life” to raise awareness and raise funds for its mission of caring for young women and their babies. More than 160 community members displayed their support for the work of Ruth Harbor by attending the walk. Others walked on their own. Gifts and pledges are totaling nearly $30,000 as contributions continue to arrive. Last year’s walk provided $21,000 in contributions.

The “Walk for Life” was held on the Meredith Trail near downtown Des Moines and coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, as well as the sixth anniversary of operation for Ruth Harbor.

“WALK” APPROACH IS RIGHT FOR MANY SUPPORTERS

While a walk is not a new approach to raising funds or awareness, Mark McDougal, executive director at Ruth Harbor believes it fits strategic planning for funding their care for young women. “Some contributors look at our mission and decide to support it directly with their checkbook. Others who care about helping our young clients want a hands-on method of helping. They may or may not have financial resources to give, but will gladly talk with others and invite them to participate by sponsoring their two-mile walk.”

McDougal’s comments are supported by the results. Enthusiastic sponsored walkers raised an average of $268 per person. Four walkers raised over $1,000 each. One of those was a seven-year old that increased his sponsorship from $1,080 in 2006 to $1,640 this year.

When walkers find sponsors, they naturally talk to them about Ruth Harbor and how it helps young women facing unplanned pregnancies. McDougal and others believe it is important for a broad section of the community to know about Ruth Harbor’s services and support for clients. Therefore, the Walk helps raise awareness as well as funds.

Community Makes “Walk” a Success for Ruth Harbor
Des Moines, Iowa – RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, recently held its first annual “Walk for Life” to raise awareness and raise funds for its mission of caring for young women and their babies. More than 100 community members displayed their support for the work of Ruth Harbor by raising more than $20,500 in gifts and pledges. Previous spring fundraising events for Ruth Harbor have netted about $5,000 each year, so there is great enthusiasm among Ruth Harbor staff and leadership with this year’s results.

The “Walk for Life” was held on the Meredith Trail near downtown Des Moines and coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, as well as the fifth anniversary of operation for Ruth Harbor.

"Terri, why was it important for you and your husband to have Catey at Ruth Harbor?"

If Cate had stayed at home the entire pregnancy, it would have ripped our family apart. My inability to give Cate the attention she required and demanded would have cost our sons the attention they needed to cope through this family crisis. Also, because there was so much strain in our relationship, I didn't think it was in the boy's best interest for Cate and I to spend most of the day arguing. With Cate in a safe place, I was able to put worry aside and show the boys that I felt they were important in our family as well.

The skills taught, were helpful to Cate in returning home. Ruth Harbor was a good environment for her to learn how to do the laundry, dishes, make her bed, keep her room clean, keep track of her money, and keep a schedule. Even though I had tried to teach her some of these things at home, she wasn't interested in learning them from me. She also benefited from the "family" style devotions, discussions, and time spent together and youth activities at the church.

Each staff member at Ruth Harbor has played an important role in working with our family: Barb is the constant, consistent mother. Jim is a godly, spiritual man who helped Catey to see what a true spiritual leader of the home is like. This modeling helped Cate see what she should strive to be and to see what kind of man she needs to look for in marriage.

The counseling helped Cate with a multitude of issues. But we received more than we had hoped for when that counseling and encouragement was extended to Marty and I and our family. We received helpful parenting tips and ideas for trying to glue our family back together.

Visiting Catey here in Des Moines turned into important family time. By scheduling visits to see Cate, we were forced as a family to spend time together. We were able to do things we hadn't taken the time to do as a family. Special memories were created during that time, such as picnics in the park, hotel stays where the children could swim, and a train ride in Boone.

If it were not for the support from people like you, we would not have been able to send Cate to Ruth Harbor. Our income does not allow for what some may call "such luxuries." The birthfather's family could not contribute either, even though they felt it was the right place for her to be.

Today, we are blessed with a sweet grandson who has changed our lives and been the light of our world. My four sons have learned first hand, what fatherhood will require. They have been more than helpful. Each change Steven's diapers, play with him, feed him, and carry him like a sack of potatoes without prompting or complaining. They truly love being with him and have yet to find him a nuisance. When Cate and Steven go somewhere for a few days, the boys are absolutely lost without their "'Tevie." They can't wait for him to come home so they can play with him. I know that eventually, they may tire of his tagging along, but for now they want to be with him and are great "father" figures to him. My husband is also very involved. No, he doesn't change diapers, but he does play with Steven when he is home. Steven is lucky. He has more men in his life to hopefully teach him how to be a great man of God someday, than most boys do.

After believing that sex, boys, and boundaries were all finished conversations with my daughter, we found ourselves facing an unplanned pregnancy that threatened to diminish or destroy our closest relationships.

I cannot begin, in this short amount of time to tell you how important Ruth Harbor has been to my family and me. I could go on for days! Wonderful relationships have been made that have changed our lives. I feel such a warm affection and love for everyone at Ruth Harbor.

It is people such as you who make a difference in a family such as ours. We could not have survived the past year and a half without you and the staff at Ruth Harbor.

Community Continues To Support Ruth Harbor Ministry
Fundraising Banquet Results Demonstrate Community's Support

Ruth Harbor, a locally-founded residential care facility that helps women facing an unplanned pregnancy, today announced that community members committed more than $43,000 in donations and pledges at Ruth Harbor's third annual fundraising banquet.

The banquet, which was held on November 11, 2004 at the Embassy Suites, gathered-together more than 300 central Iowans who came to support the ministry financially and catch a glimpse of Ruth Harbor's activity in 2004 and hopes for 2005. "Although we're always in need of volunteers and people to provide prayer and outreach to the community, we also need financial support from the community," said Mark McDougal, Executive Director at Ruth Harbor. "We receive support from area churches, foundations, and businesses, but donations and pledges from individuals who care about this ministry, which accounts for nearly 60% of the ministry's funding, continue to be our primary funding source.

Last year's fundraising banquet was the turning point to better financial health after experiencing a shortfall of $30,000 in September 2003. "The community rallied behind us last year, but to see those numbers increase again at this year's fundraiser tells me they feel just as strongly about our work now," said McDougal.

Underwriters Make Banquet Possible
WHO Radio's Van Harden hosted the banquet and special speaker, Jim Pierson, focused attention on the need for a maternity home like Ruth Harbor, spoken from his personal experience of being a house parent to over 300 young women. A Ruth Harbor alumnus also shared her personal story with attendees. The banquet costs were completely underwritten by supportive friends of Ruth Harbor so contributions and pledges will go toward meeting the needs of Ruth Harbor residents.

Welcoming New Residents Again
Many know that the housing portion of our services was suspended during our recent transition to new house parents. We are now able to provide the housing that many of our clients desperately need along with the other program components: counseling, education and career development, life skills, nutrition and health care, spiritual guidance, referrals for other human services, and specialized education on the options of parenting or placing for adoption.

We welcome your referrals of young women up to age 23 who are seeking help!

New House Parents
We are fortunate to introduce Jim and Barbara Gamble as our new house parents. They are Iowa natives, raised 6 daughters of their own, have previous house parenting experience, and recently housed a couple young women in need in their own home.

Over the long haul, the success and effectiveness of house parents depend on those who skillfully maintain leadership when our fulltime house parents are "off duty." In addition to Steve and Sherry Stroup, David and Darlene Turner have recently joined the staff team as relief house parents. Though not in the home as many hours, these part time staff members have the same skills and training as do our full time house parents.

New Benefits for clients
In addition to the programming components listed in the first paragraph, Ruth Harbor now provides new assessments for self-sufficiency and career interests. This feedback and the trained personnel that go with it, assist in creating a more specific and efficient care plan for each resident. Read more about these benefits in our next newsletter.

Financial Health
Like most non-profits, 2003 was financially stressful for Ruth Harbor as contributions and grant making were down. However, individuals, churches, and the community at large are responding to make Ruth Harbor a continuing reality. God has blessed us through many of you!

Ruth Harbor will soon celebrate its 3rd anniversary of helping young women who are alone and facing an unplanned pregnancy. Many young women can already point back to Ruth Harbor and identify it as a turning point in their lives; for themselves and their baby.

A key staff role in showing grace and love to these girls is our house parents. After serving faithfully from our humble beginnings as Ruth Harbor's house parents, Tom and Collette Beytien have taken up a new ministry as missionaries in Mexico. We are now seeking God's choice for their replacement to be the "stand-in parents" that many of our residents have never had.

Would you help us identify couples that might consider this position at Ruth Harbor? Your suggestion or recommendation is key to beginning conversations with qualified candidates. Some couples that you know, maybe in your church, should consider this employment and ministry opportunity. The rewards are truly eternal!

While taking advantage of technology by posting our need on the Internet, positions like this are often filled through purposeful, thoughtful "word of mouth" among those in our area who really care about serving God, our community, and these young women.

Community Members Rally To Support Ruth Harbor

Governor Terry Branstad hosted the banquet. The banquet, which was held on November 13, 2003 at the Embassy Suites, gathered-together more than 275 central Iowans who rallied to support this ministry financially.

Mark Kitts drew attention from his personal experience to the need for a maternity home like Ruth Harbor.
Mr. Kitts, given up for adoption in 1966, tracked down his birth parents, got them back together, and officiated at their 1991 wedding at Covington Trinity Episcopal Church, in Ohio. His story was featured in a made for TV movie, My Son, the Matchmaker, a 1996 CBS film about Mark Kitts' search for his birth parents. (Hallmark Channel).

There was beautiful music throughout the evening.

Two Ruth Harbor alumni also shared their personal stories with attendees.

The organization’s house parents Tom and Collette Beytien have stayed with the ministry well beyond their 24-month commitment to live with, and mentor, the girls in the house. We bid farewell to Tom and Collette this evening. The couple has accepted a new ministry assignment in Mexico.

The banquet, which was held on November 13, 2003 at the Embassy Suites, gathered-together more than 275 central Iowans who rallied to support this ministry financially. "Although we're always in need of volunteers and people to provide prayer and outreach to the community, we also need financial support from the community," said Mark McDougal, Executive Director at Ruth Harbor. As reported in an announcement released in September 2003, Ruth Harbor was experiencing a shortfall of $30,000, causing them to temporarily stop accepting new residents. During that time, Ruth Harbor has continued to field dozens of calls from women in need of a ministry like Ruth Harbor. "We're excited to begin accepting residents again now that our immediate shortfall has been met," said McDougal. "Although we will continue operating month-to-month, our long-term goal is to create a financial reserve so we never have to interrupt services again."

Ruth Harbor Seeks New House Parents, Funding Sources

September 25, 2003-- Ruth Harbor, a locally-founded care ministry that helps women facing an unplanned pregnancy, today announced that it would temporarily stop accepting residents as it seeks new house parents and pursues additional funding sources.

The organization’s house parents Tom and Collette Beytien have stayed with the ministry well beyond their 24-month commitment to live with, and mentor, the girls in the house, which is located at 534 42nd Street in Des Moines. The couple has already accepted a new ministry assignment in Mexico.

“The expected transition of Tom and Collette provides Ruth Harbor’s leadership with an excellent opportunity to improve its financial footing, train new house parents, and re-launch the ministry in early 2004,” said Ruth Harbor Executive Director Mark McDougal. “We want to ensure that if we take women into our resident program, we can see them through to the birth of their babies.”

Since opening its residential facility two years ago, Ruth Harbor has accepted 27 women into its resident program and provided assistance to many others. The timing of this transition was also driven in part by the fact that no current residents will be displaced. August saw the birth of 2 more babies and the successful transition of their mothers into safe or self-sufficient housing. Knowing it would face these issues, the ministry has held off accepting new residents during September.

Transition Assistance

According to McDougal, the Board and staff will take the next three months to pursue house parents and additional funding sources. During that transition period, the staff counselor will continue to assist girls, putting them in contact with other residential options as well as shepherding homes that have been screened by Ruth Harbor. “Until we know what the future holds and who our new house parents will be, we feel strongly that we need to provide options that offer consistency to the women,” explained Lyn Helton, Ruth Harbor’s counselor. “Taking residents now, and then shifting to new house parents part way through their pregnancies, will only further exacerbate the feelings of abandonment and uncertainty our clients already face.”

The Ruth Harbor leadership team fully expects to begin accepting residents again early next year. “We’re anxious to be ready,” Helton continued. “We have worked with 10 inquirers in the past three weeks – most with immediate needs.” Along with evidence of continued need, the ministry team has been encouraged by the success of its alumni, community support, and the financial response of many present constituents.

Financial Need, Board Expansion

During this time of transition, Ruth Harbor will also re-energize its fundraising efforts. The organization is currently facing a $30,000 shortfall in expected giving. The ministry will hold its annual banquet on November 13 at the Embassy Suites by the River. Mark Kitts, a national speaker on the topic of unplanned pregnancy and how a child can serve in the capacity of “healer,” will speak. Like many non-profit organizations, in the two years since 9-11, Ruth Harbor has struggled to raise its annual $250,000 budget. The Board is also looking for additional members interested in helping restart the ministry. Interested people should contact the Ruth Harbor Office for a Board member application.

Open House for the Community Marks "Open House" for Residents

May 3, 2003--Des Moines, Iowa - RUTH HARBOR, a home for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, will celebrate its third anniversary of operation with an open house on Mother's Day this Sunday, May 9 from 1-4 p.m. The public is cordially invited to tour the Ruth Harbor home and meet members of the staff and board of directors; including new house parents. Ruth Harbor is located on the southwest corner of 42nd and Ingersoll.

SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE FOR YOUNG WOMEN FACING UNPLANNED PREGNANCY
The event has special significance for prospective clients because new house parents have been hired and Ruth Harbor is again accepting residents in the home - a key component of its mission to meet the needs of young women facing unplanned pregnancies.

While counseling and programming have continued, Ruth Harbor suspended the housing component of its work this past winter to locate new house parents and restore financial health. Both objectives have now been addressed.

"We are happy to have our new house parents on board, but our greatest joy is knowing that we can again meet the specific housing needs of our clients," said Mark McDougal, Executive Director. "We've been helping them in various ways, but forced to support their housing needs through other agencies, organizations, and means including referrals to maternity homes out-of-state."

The annual Mother's Day Open House allows constituents and those with new interest to visit the Ruth Harbor home where, during the rest of the year, the house is "home" for these young women and a sanctuary where they can be healthy and safe, have needs met, and work through a program and care plan specifically designed for them and their coming baby."

The event also allows visitors the opportunity to learn about Ruth Harbor directly from members of the staff and board of directors.

ABOUT RUTH HARBOR
Ruth Harbor is a program and home for young women who are alone and facing an unplanned pregnancy. The organization was founded by three local women and opened its doors to serve residents for the first time in May 2001. Ruth Harbor was incorporated with the state of Iowa in 1996, granted non-profit status by the I.R.S. in 1997, and is licensed as a community residential facility by the Iowa Department of Human Services.
